1., Mióta zenélsz, hogyan kerültél kapcsolatba a dj-zéssel?
Voltak Mono-s dolgok 1000arc-cal, akivel a Mappa/Kontra/Trafó klubban is sokat zenéltünk.
Az elmúlt 1,5 évben a Budapest in the dark projectre fókuszálok, ahol David Mole és Zegotha teszi teljessé a csapatot. A Müsziben, illetve a Corvin-on vagyunk az utóbbi időben aktívak. Tavaly nyáron kezdtem el a „Varázsnap” sorozatot a szentendrei Duna-parton a Kacsakő bisztrónál, illetve a Műcsarnok teraszos sorozatot – ezeket idén is szeretném folytatni a csapattal.
Podcast fronton vagyok nagyon aktív, a Digitally Imported (DI.FM) minimal csatornáján megy havi műsorom a „Sonovizor”, vendégmixek is gyakran hallhatóak. Az idei epizódokban például a most szombaton (március 26-án) a Müsziben nálunk zenélő Sascha Hinz és Florian Kötter live act-je, illetve Andrea Giuliani és Luca Rossetti live act-je volt hallható.

3., Hogyan tudnád meghatározni a zenei világodat, mint dj? Mely stílusokat, irányzatokat tartod jelenleg a legelőremutatóbbnak?
4., A Budapest In The Dark nevű partysorozat megálmodója és vezetője vagy. Hogyan indult anno?
Fő csapásirány a hipnotikus, kicsit pszichedelikus, hellyel-közzel sötét elektronika, ami széles skálán mozog a minimal-tech house-techno háromszögben.
Azóta a világ is változott sokat.
Kérlek mutasd be pár szóval a mixet!

How long have you been in music, how did you get in touch with dj-ing?
My dad is a record collector, also loves playing the guitar. We’ve always had music on at home. Already in my elementary school years I had the interest. First, I was playing with my dad’s amp – I attached 2 cassette players; one to the left, one to the right, and I used the balance potentiometer as a “fader”.
Later on we made the “school discos” and the summer camp closing parties in my 7th-8th grade from tapes.
I bought my first recordss in around ’95. Then there was a little break, then I reactivated collecting in approximately 2004. I played a lot of breakbeat, and we’ve often opened the line up of the 361 (illegal)fest’s breakbeat bower with DJ 1000arc.
Beside breakbeat, acid and techno have always been present. I started to actively create podcasts in 2010. In 2011 Awdio.com (streaming provider) offered a main page promotion to the channel. My Sonovizor show grew out of this, which – after the Paris One webradio – has been a regular monthly show of Digitally Imported for 2 years now.
Tell us about your career by now, please! Where have you been so far, what kind of projects, residencies have been in your life?
I wouldn’t call it a career…. 🙂 For me this is love, an exit from the noise of everyday life. I find music a highly honest way of communication and the relationship that exists between the selector and the receiver of music. I’ve been to quite a few places throughout the years, but I prefer working with 150-200 people dance floors the most.
We had events in Mono with 1000 Arc, with whom I also played in Mappa/Kontra/ Trafo a lot, too.
I also had/have cooperation with the Tilos Radio “Electrocat” crew. “Valyo beach” has also been kind of a residency for years. Many times I played in Germany, Belgium and the UK. I’ve also been to the Netherlands and a Czech dj booth once.
I’m quite fond of smaller, underground parties. I’d also wish to mention the “7végeazégalatt” (translates to Weeked under the Sun) mini-festival, which is though resting this year, but has given me countless beautiful moments in the past five years.
Lately, for around 1.5 year now, I focus on the Budapest in the Dark project where the team is topped with David Mole and Zegotha. We are mainly active in Müszi and Corvin club. Last summer I started the “Varázsnap” (= Magicday) series, taking place on the Danube side in Szentendre at the Kacsakő bistro, and also the Műcsarnok Terrace sessions – these I definitely wish to continue this year as well with the team.
I am very active on the podcast front – on the minimal channel of Digitally Imported (DI.FM) I have my Sonovizor show on a monthly basis, where guest mixes can also be heard. In this year’s episodes, for example, you could listen to Sascha Hinz and Florian Kötter’s live act, who are playin in Müszi this very Saturday (26 March), or the live act by Andrea Guiliani and Luca Rossetti.
You can find the Sonovizor collection under this link. (https://soundcloud.com/seldonbudapest/…/sonovizor-radio-show)
How would you describe you musical world as a DJ? Which styles, trends do you find the most progressive? Do you maybe have a favorite label, producer?
I could not describe it briefly. Hypnotic, deep, smiling-with-closed-eyes, somewhat dark, somewhat light… Komplex, the unique fusion of techo – tech house – minimal, spiced with a little bit of psychedelia.
The end products are different in case of a podcast and a live show. I treat the radio/web mixes as if they were books. I think in curves, arches as in storytelling. As there is no instant feedback from the listeners, I find it important not to provide a monotonous 1-2 hours – you need to engage the audiophiles.
Since 2011-12 I’ve been mainly moved by dark groove. In case of party attendances, I find the musical world of Hawtin, Joris Voorn – from the biggies – closest to me, but it’s quite “polarized” like this… Creepy Finger Records has been the marker beacon label for me back then (Nino Blink and Terry Whyte, the founders of the label have also been to us a few years ago).
In the past year I pay serious attention to musicians with South-American, Argentinian and Mexican origin – ingenious things come from that area – something fresh, new, inspiring!
Nowadays, DMT records and Tlaloc Inc are the corners of my heart. And – though I could mention so many names to fill out several pages – to mention of few of the producers/DJs I focus on: Ode Mean from Belgium, the Mexican Mogo and Signal Delux, and Ian Cris from France.
You are the originator and leader of the Budapest in the Dark party series. How did it start? What do we need to know about these events and what are your future plans?
Luigi Rossi and his Togher in the Dark project has been great motivation – we managed to have him as a guest on A38 last year (Troy Pierce, Miro Pajic, Luigi Rossi, Chryophase and Seldon).
In his case “dark” does not stand for the lack of light, rather as a synonym for the unknown. The kind of darkness in which the interesting things happen, where things are hidden, that falls out of the spotlight of the industrialized entertainment. Our aim is not only to have a party, but to make it into an Event. The musical content of the team is not homogenic either. We complement each other, since David Mole moves on a wide range scale and also Zegotha’s musical taste is very diverse. The main direction is hypnotic, a little psychedelic, sporadically dark electronics, which moves on versatile variations within the minimal-tech / house / techno triangle.
We invite foreign guest with similar mentality, who think about music alike.
I do not consider this as a profession or business…. I guess “mission” is the best word I could use. “Underground” equals to the egress from the materialistic, trend-following and fast-paced world. Heart and Soul, given via music.
You have seen a lot and are experienced. How do you find the current state of the music scene here in Hungary? What could be done, in your opinion, to get the “Golden Years” back?
For me the Golden Age was from the second half of the 90s, till the first years of the millennium. Since then the world has changed a lot. Innocence of the honest, wonderment kind is lost, so is the openness towards multiple directions which was probably due to the many new impulses. In the past ten years, together with the small clubs, underground has practically disappeared. Somehow, the organizers were forced to think about the big(ger) names in order to gain publicity, to have income. I find it essential to mention that this is not exclusive to Hungary – the situation is the same everywhere, as much as I hear about it from our peregrine guests and friends.
We’ve also been a little bit spoiled, there are uncountable bookings these days! The downside of this that the amateur, emerging organizations can hardly stay alive in the long run. However, many groups manage to grow out of this – a living example can be either Szoba Studio / Deepfields, or to mention a bigger formation, Contra Mundum, who became a determining factor of the local scene within only a few years.
So, seems like something has stated recently, which is good. We’re approaching a generation shift regarding the audience, but you can also sense that many feel the need to gain the kind of social and musical experience that used to exist, both from the side of the creators and the listeners.
You have created Primate Sessio 019 for us – thank you for it. Please, introduce the mix in a few words!
I wanted to create a mix that is suitable for the occasion. One of the major things to consider was the fact that spring is here and I wish to reflect it in the mood of the mix. It draws quite a bit of a curve, starting with some light tech house themes, and it is gradually getting darker which then leads back to a looser ending. There are several Hungarian artists in the mix: the fresh issue/publication of Red Skull label from Szeged, Raqpar and Dani Meister, Mateo, Gaga, Realplastic…
