Valószínűleg sem a BBC heti rendszerességgel jelentkező rádióműsora sem pedig Paul Oakenfold nem szorul különösebb bemutatása egy elektronikus zenével foglalkozó oldalon, mégis néhány ide kapcsolódó gondolattal kezdjük.

A mára már legendás Essential Mix-eket a brit BBC a Radio 1 csatornán sugározza, szombat reggel 1:00 és 3:00 között – GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) szerint – egészen 1993. október 30 óta. A házigazda már a kezdetektől Pete Tong aki minden héten egy folyamatos, két órás mixet kínál a hallgatóknak, a dance szcéna legkülönlegesebb, legaktuálisabb művészeitől. Közel 27 éves múltjával az Essential Mix az egyik leghosszabb ideje aktív műsor a BBC Radio 1-on, és egyike azon keveseknek, amelyet nem élőben közvetítenek.

A londoni Paul Oakenfold karrierjének kezdete még az 1980-as évek elejéig nyúlik vissza. Neve mégis a 90-es évek közepén, tehát mondhatjuk, hogy nagyjából az Essential Mixek első évadjaival párhuzamosan robbant be a köztudatba és ezzel együtt a nemzetközi klubkultúrába. Ő volt az aki elsőként kezdte használni a Goa fogalmát zenei értelemben, a hangzást az indiai Goa strandjain fedezte fel és összeolvasztotta hasonló hangzásvilágú európai zenékkel, hogy megteremtse saját stílusát. 1994-ben készített két, kétórás epizódot a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix sorozathoz, amelyek közül az első 1994. március 20-án, a második pedig, a legendás „Goa Mix” 1994. december 18-án, vasárnap került adásba.

1995-ben ő lett az első DJ, aki a Glastonbury Fesztiválon a nagy-színpadon játszott 90 ezres hallgatóság előtt, amelyet egyébként mai napig kedvenc koncertjének tart. 1997. június 9-én jelent meg a Global Underground sorozat 004-es epizója, a Live in Oslo, amely tökéletesen bemutatja Oakenfold akkori eklektikus zenei ízlését, hiszen a mix a tánczene legkülönfélébb formáit egyesíti. A korai Global Underground kiadások amerikai disztribútora eltérő számozási sémát alkalmazott, ezért hozzá köthető a nem létező második darab. Ez valójában a Global Underground 007, melyet New York-ban vettek fel és az csak Egyesült Államokban került kiadásra GU002-es lemezként kategorizálva. Az összeállítás Nagy-Britanniában 1998. május 25-én jelent meg, az Egyesült Államok-ban viszont a kiadás dátuma csak a következő év eleje, 1999. január 19-e. Ez volt a második produkció és egyben az utolsó munkája is a GU-val.

Az évezred végére kijelenthető, hogy ő lett az egyik ha nem a legnépszerűbb lemezlovas világszerte, melyet mi sem bizonyít jobban, mint a BBC azon gesztusa, hogy minden hónapban 1-1 epizódot neki dedikáltak a hetente jelentkező Essential Mixek idősávjában. Amelyek sorrendben a következők voltak:
